Grabado el 2 de Marzo de 1959 en los estudios de 30th Street Studios en New York.
Muchísimo se ha escrito sobre la generación y realización de este album. Marcó un hito en muchos aspectos en la carrera tanto de Miles como de Bill. La música modal se instalaba sin retorno en el Jazz y luego se esparcería por todos los ámbitos de la música moderna. El centro neurálgico de la idea del álbum era lograr la improvisación en grado mayor. Los temas sólo fueron bosquejados por Miles y Bill y los músicos absorbieron maravillosamente el proyecto. Considerar el grado de excelencia de los músicos aparte del dúo central, es asombroso. Los nombres de John Coltrane y Cannonball Adderley, instalan la sesión en algo maravilloso.
Paul Chambers y Jimmy Cobb aportaron el justo apoyo rítmico que necesitaba la ocasión.
Wynton Kelly, el pianista oficial de Miles en su quinteto, participó en un track.
Al cierre del año, se produciría otro hecho extraordinario. Grabaron por vez primera un álbum en el formato trío, Bill Evans, el extraordinario bajista Scott LaFaro y Paul Motian en batería. Comenzaría entonces casi un año de unión musical y espiritual entre Bill y su bajista, que terminaría trágicamente con la muerte de Scott en un accidente automovilístico. Dejará marcado a Bill por mucho tiempo y le costará un gran esfuerzo el convencerse de tan lamentable pérdida. Estos músicos cambiaron el concepto tradicional de la labor de los instrumentistas en un trío. Plantearon el concepto del contrapunto, improvisando líneas cruzadas y entremezclando las ideas . La complementación y una especie de comunicación psíquica fue fundamental para lograr los objetivos.
Una de las razones del abandono de Evans del grupo de Miles, fué la intención de trabajar el formato trío. De hecho antes de grabar Kind Of Blue, grabó otro álbum en trío " On green dolphin street ", con Paul Chambers en bajo y su amigo Philly Jo Jones en batería.
Este año grabó también algo no usual, que fué el álbum grabado con el trombonista Bob Brookmeyer, pero ambos al piano. También fué un año de interesantes y valiosas colaboraciones con Jimmy Giuffre, Tony Scott y Lee Konitz.
