Bill Evans - Discografía Cronológica 1962

 

Nuevamente una foto definitoria de un año de actividad de Bill Evans. El pianista se enfocó en lograr un reemplazo para su recordado contrabajista Scott LaFaro, fallecido trágicamente en 1960, durante sus admiradas sesiones en el Village Vanguard. El elegido fué Chuck Israel, al principio manteniendo a Paul Motian en la batería, por corto tiempo, pues, finalmente ocuparía su lugar el baterista Larry Bunker.

Continuó Bill desarrollando su nuevo estilo para el formato trío, logrando una gran coordinación y creatividad improvisativa con Israels.

El año comienza con un álbum medio extraño, " The Vibes Are On ",que incluye sólo tres temas del trío con Israels y Motian en el Club Birdland, agregando un registro de 1968 de la TV CBS con un trío con Eddie Gonez y Jack DeJohnett y dos registros con orquesta, apareciendo como director Alfredo Antonini y con John Lewis compartiendo el piano.  Lo mantengo en la colección como una rareza.

Grabó también un álbum con la orquesta dirigida por Tadd Dameron, titulado "The Magic Touch", con destacados músicos como Blue Mitchell, Clark Terry, Philly Joe Jones, Jimmy Cleveland, Ron Carter.

Luego grabó un álbum en calidad de piano solo, modalidad que era muy atrayente para Bill. Se puede lograr encontrar el álbum como " Conception " o  "Easy To Love ". 

Más tarde, el 24 de Abril se lograba otro hito en sus grabaciones. La valiosa colaboración con el guitarrista Jim Hall en su álbum " Undercurrent ". Dúo de lujo que logró una excelente acogida.

Incluído en rarezas de Evans debemos citar el álbum " Just Jazz ", con un grupo dirigido por Benny Golson, con muy buenos músicos como Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter. Sin destacar como registro, luego se editó un álbum " Pop + Jazz = Swing ", un engendro de los tracks del álbum " Just Jazz " con pistas de música Pop. No es digno de considerarlo en la discografía de Bill Evans.

El álbum " Moon Beams " marca la vuelta a la normalidad con el trío Israels - Motian., seguido inmediatamente con la edición del álbum " How My Heart Sings " . Así se afiataba el trabajo de Evans con su nuevo contrabajista.

Se destaca ese año también el álbum " Interplay " grabado con el trompeta Freddie Hubbard , Jim Hall en guitarra, Percy Heath en bajo y Philly Jo Jones en batería.

En ése año, Bill Evans realizó una temporada en el Club " Shelly's Mane Hole", propiedad del destacado baterista Shelly Manne. Aprovechando la ocasión, se acordó realizar un álbum con Bill Evans, Shelly Manne en batería y Monty Budwig, el bajista de Manne. Se tituló " Emphaty ". La labor de Manne es muy destacable en el registro.

Fianelmente aparece el álbum " Loose Blues "con Zoot Sims, Jim Hall, Ron Carter y Philly Jo Jones.

Carátula de Destacado Album  con LaFaro

No hay otra forma de presentar el año 1961 de la discografía de Bill Evans, sin utilizar esta carátula.

Considerado uno de sus mejores sesiones grabadas y tal como lo prefería Bill, en público y además en el legandario club The Village Vanguard. Y lo principal, acompañado por el joven talentoso contrabajista. Scott LaFaro y el baterista Paul Motian.

The Village Vanguard la Catedral del Jazz

Un 25 de Junio de 1961, se grabó este registro que se convertiría en el hito de una nueva historia para el formato trío piano, contrabajo y batería. Así como en 1959, se marcaría un hito en la historia con el álbum " Kind of Blue ", con Miles Davis, con el advenimiento de la música modal y nuevos conceptos de improvisación, en ésta ocasión, otra vez es Bill Evans, pero esta vez con su trío, que marca el rumbo en el Jazz.

Junto al álbum " Sunday At The Village Vanguard ", se editó una segunda sesión de temas de ése día histórico, en el álbum " Waltz For Debby ". Estaban realizando las sesiones en el Village Vanguard cuando Scott LaFaro sufrió el accidente automovilístico que le costó la vida, dejando a Bill marcado para el resto de su vida.

Anteriormente el 2 de Febrero de 1961, el sello Riverside había lanzado el primer registro del grupo con el álbum " Explorations ". Es decir, en un año tenemos tres testimonios sonoros valiosísimos para admirar a estos grandes músicos. 

Obviamente fué un año trascendental para Bill, ya que el 23 de Febrero, paticipaba en la grabación de un álbum que recibió una acogida extraordinaria en el ambiente jazzístico. Se trata de " The Blues And The Abstract Truth, del sello Impulse, con un grupo liderado por el saxofonista Oliver Nelson, con Freddie Hubbard en trompeta, Eric Dolphy en saxo alto, Paul Chambers en bajo y Roy Haynes en batería, paticipando también el saxo barítono George Barrow. Personalmente el tema " Stolen Moment ", con el que comienza el álbum, es uno de los que más me ha impactado en mi experiencia como oyente de ésta hermosa música que es el Jazz.

Me tengo que referir además a un registro que Bill realizó ése año con el destacado vibrafonista Dave Pike, en noviembre, a fin del año, el álbum " Pike's Peak ". 

Personalmente es destacado, pues tuve la maravillosa ocasión en los 80, de conocer y compartir entretenidas sesiones con Dave Pike en la ciudad de Ghent en Bélgica en su club de Jazz y porsupuesto el gran tema de conversación se centró en su colaboración con Bill.

Otros registros de 1961, son un álbum con Cannonball Adderley, otro con Herbie Mann y por último su participación en un registro del cantante Mark Murphy.

Así se cierra éste impactante año para Bill.

Bill Evans - Discografía Cronológica 1960

   Contrabajista Scott LaFaro

El año 1960 estará marcado para Bill Evans, por su colaboración con Scott LaFaro. De 9 registros del año, cuatro son con el destacado contrabajista. 

Ese año grabaron dos albumes en el celebrado y famoso club Birdland. El conjunto completado con el baterista Paul Motian, el cual en los años anteriores se había convertido en partner de Evans, comenzaron su ruta para convertirse en un ejemplo de virtuosismo del formato trío.

Se caracteriza el año también por realizar grabaciones dentro del third stream music, un álbum  con George Russell y otro con Gunther Schuller y John Lewis, el pianista que formó el afamado Modern Jazz Quartet.

También participó en dos álbumes con los destacados trombonistas Kai Winding, Jimmy Jnepper y Jay Jay Johnson.

El último registro del año, es un curioso y valioso documento sonoro, con un ensayo de Bill Evans con Scott LaFaro, del tema  " My foolish heart ", incluyendo además una entrevista a Bill Evans realizada por George Klavin.
